23 Mar 5 Killer SEO Tips To Include In Your Content Marketing Strategy
SEO and quality content is the foundation to any successful content marketing strategy. Google Panda and Penguin algorithms have change that way we do search engine optimization. No longer are the black hat spam tricks of the past effective at increasing and maintaining long-term search engine visibility. Quality content has become the cornerstone to obtaining long-term search engines rankings.
Many businesses, web designers and content marketers view SEO as something to be done after content is created when in fact it goes hand in hand with content marketing. They are essentially two sides of the same coin, you can’t have visibly in the searches without SEO and you can’t do SEO without quality content.
Optimizing your content allows it to be found by more potential customers. SEO is and will always be a critical partner to content marketing. By utilizing search engine optimization you’ll create a continuous flow potential customers visiting your website for more information on your business, product or service. Statically it’s been proven that organic traffic has a better ROI over time then paid traffic.
5 Ways to Search Engine Optimize your Blog
1. Good SEO starts with keyword research
I always recommend doing your keyword research first because doing it after is like putting the cart before the horse. It much easier to write an article when you know the keywords you’re targeting verses then trying fit the keywords in existing content. The better you are at identifying high trafficked low completion keywords the better you will be at ranking your content.
There are many free and paid keyword research tools available, if you’re going to be publishing content on a regular basis I would recommend investing in a paid tool. You can visit our resource page for a list a keyword research tools that I recommend.
When doing keyword research you want to avoid the obvious broad keywords, focus on using multiple related keywords or phrases with a lower search volume that added together to get your higher overall search volume. For example this blog post is targeting 8 key phrases that together combined get 1140 monthly searches. By doing this it increases the opportunity to rank for multiple key phrases because I’m targeting less competitive keywords.
2. Keyword placement
Avoid over using keywords (keyword stuffing). Remember Google focuses on the intent of the keyword not necessarily keyword itself. So that means you can use variation of the keyword in the same sentence.
For example, if the keyword is “personal finance tools” a variation could be “tools to manage your personal finances”. As a rule thumb I include my main keywords in the H1, first sentence, last sentence, meta title and description.
3. Internal Linking
Every page/post should link to another related page or post within your website. These distributes your “link juice” throughout the site and allows you to rank multiple pages or post. It also great way to keep readers on your website longer, by leading them to other useful related content.
Note: As with anything, linking should be done in moderation. 1 or 2 internal links are fine but if link to much it can dilute your “link juice”
4. External Linking
Link out to other authority websites (.gov or .org.) or blogs, by doing so provides additional information and resources to the reader, remember Google’s goal is to provide valuable related content to its users. By linking out to other websites it appears a though you’re trying to inform and educate to your readers.
Linking to high authority industry related blogs is also a great way to catch the eye of influencers in your industry. I recently wrote post that recommended a popular SEO tool. I am not an affiliate of the tool so I received no financial benefit from recommending it. A couple of days later I received a message from the company thanking me for mention. Which now that leaves the door open for me to cultivate a relationship with an international software company.
5. Off page SEO and backlink building
Building backlinks to your blog post helps propel your visibility in the searches. There are several ways to create backlinks but the simplest way is to use social media, traffic assets and PR tactics. When linking back to your site make sure to use the full URL (example http://yourdomain.com/blogpost).
If site allows you to use anchor text in the description box make sure you avoid using the same anchor text for each backlink you create. When in doubt use your post title or business name.
